After suffering a heart attack last week, Bills safety Damar Hamlin gave his first public speech since the incident in a touching video message to first responders and Bills fans.
“First and foremost, I want to thank all of the amazing first responders who came to my aid so quickly after my cardiac arrest,” Hamlin said in the video. “And also, I want to thank everyone who’s been support [sic] me from across the country.”
The 30-year-old Hamlin told fans that he’s feeling better every day, adding that he plans to return to football as soon as possible.

Thank you all for coming. It feels great to be back in this room with all of you. First and foremost, I’d like to thank God for keeping me alive and healthy these past few weeks. Secondly, I would like to thank my family and friends for their unwavering support throughout this ordeal. Finally, I would like to thank the Buffalo Bills organization for giving me the opportunity to return to football and represent our team in such a positive way.
Since my cardiac arrest last November 25th I have had the privilege of being surrounded by some of the best medical professionals in the world. They have done an amazing job keeping me alive and helping me regain some mobility. Today I want to talk about my experience after my cardiac arrest in more detail so that other people may learn from it if they ever find themselves in a similar situation.
Most people who have cardiac arrests go into a coma or die within minutes due to lack of oxygen or blood flow to the brain. My experience was very different however because when things went wrong with my heart – as they often do – paramedics
Hamlin talks about his return to football
Damar Hamlin returned to the football field for the first time in nine months on Sunday, thanking first responders and fans in his first public speech since suffering a cardiac arrest. Hamlin, who was an undrafted free agent out of Portland State, was at Ralph Wilson Stadium for the Bills’ preseason game against the Giants when he fainted and later went into cardiac arrest. He was rushed to the hospital where he remained unconscious for nine days before waking up and learning that his heart had stopped beating twice. Hamlin said in his speech that he owes everything to those who helped him during his time in intensive care, including Bills players and coaches. “Football is my passion but my health is my number one priority,” Hamlin said. “I am so grateful to be back on the field and I can’t wait to continue playing.”
